Anaheim City Council Approves Installation of License Plate Readers to Enhance Public Safety

In a unanimous decision, the Anaheim City Council has approved the installation of 72 Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) across the city. This initiative aims to enhance public safety by deterring potential criminal activities and supporting crime prevention efforts.

According to the city report, 11 of these cameras will be strategically placed in the Anaheim Resort Area, encompassing Disneyland and surrounding tourist infrastructure. The primary objective is to protect critical infrastructure and deter potential acts of terrorism. Funding for this project is partially sourced from the Anaheim Police Foundation.

Additionally, 41 cameras will be deployed across the broader Orange County operational area, contributing to a regional surveillance network. This expansion reflects a collaborative effort to bolster security measures throughout the county.

While the implementation of ALPRs is intended to enhance public safety, it has also sparked discussions regarding privacy concerns and the balance between security and individual rights. The city council has emphasized that the use of these cameras will adhere to strict guidelines to ensure the protection of residents’ privacy.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about this development and participate in community discussions to voice their perspectives on the matter.
