Ducks’ Vaakanainen hits board, leaves on stretcher

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Ducks defenseman Urho Vaakanainen hit an end plate during the first period of a preseason game against the San Jose Sharks in Anaheim. Taken off the ice at the Honda Center on a stretcher. The Ducks said the Finnish defenseman was conscious and alert when he was fully mobile at UCI Medical Center. The horrific incident occurred in the middle of the opening game, when Vakanainen slammed into the backboard with dangerous speed behind the Sharks’ net. Wakanainen had just passed the ball to Derek Grant, who scored the Ducks’ opening goal on an assist.
